Give your timelines a bit of colour — we're introducing more ways to customize your Chronologies experience. All your timelines have been assigned a semi-random theme, which you can change in Appearance Settings. You can choose from 56 predefined themes.

If you're reading this and you're already registered, you might want to consider creating a new account. The reason is simple: we've refreshed our onboarding flow and made it much more interactive.

New users will now answer a few questions before signing up. Nothing too heavy, just enough for Chronologies to understand what kind of timeline they want to create, who it is for, and how they plan to use it. Those answers are then carried into the first timeline generation flow, so the AI-assisted experience starts with useful context instead of a blank page.

New onboarding experience: After signing up, users with no timelines are guided straight into creating their first one. The flow can suggest a topic from the answers provided during signup, ask follow-up questions, and help narrow things down before generating the timeline. The generated preview also feels more alive now, with streamed entries, a cleaner layout, and a smoother path from idea to saved timeline.

That's not all. We did not forget about existing users.

Video embedding in timeline entries: You can now place videos directly into your timelines. The editor has a new video tool where you can paste a supported link, preview it, and insert it into your entry. We added support for YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok videos, and Instagram Reels links.

We've got a mix of new and improved for you today: A fresh way to experience your timelines and two fixes that have been on our radar for a while.

Horizontal Timelines: Your timelines can now be displayed horizontally! Whether you prefer the classic vertical view or want a more timeline-strip feel, you can switch between the two using the toggle at the top of any timeline. Great for presentations, overviews, or just a different perspective on your story.

Real-Time Entry Deletion: We squashed a bug where deleting a timeline entry wasn't being broadcast to other collaborators in real-time. Deletions now propagate instantly. No more ghost entries lingering until someone hits refresh.

Link Editing in the Rich Text Editor: Clicking the "Edit" button on an existing link in the editor would cause the dialog to flash briefly and immediately disappear, making it practically impossible to update links. That's now fixed, and link editing works as expected.

🌍 Internationalization (i18n) Support: Chronologies now supports multiple languages. We've added German and Polish translations alongside English, allowing users to access the platform in their preferred language for a more seamless experience.

🖼️ Enhanced Embedding: Iframe Support: We've expanded embedding capabilities beyond our existing widget approach. You can now embed timelines using iframes, providing additional flexibility for website integration. This option is available in the "Share timeline" dialog for all unlisted and public timelines.

Plan Limits: Reaching and Exceeding Quotas

We've outlined two scenarios regarding plan limits, which may affect your experience based on your usage:

• Reaching Plan Limits: When you reach the limits of the Free Plan, such as the maximum number of timelines or collaborators, you won't be able to create new timelines or add more collaborators. You can either upgrade to Pro or make space by removing existing items.
• Exceeding Plan Limits: If you previously subscribed to Pro and then downgrade to the Free Plan, you might have more timelines or collaborators than the Free Plan allows. In this case, your timelines will be set to view-only mode, meaning you can still view them but cannot add, edit, or delete entries until you upgrade again or adjust your content to fit within the Free Plan limits. Embed Widget / Web Components 🌐 Now you can embed your timelines directly into your website with our new Embed Widget. Simply select the "Embed" option in the share modal, copy the provided code, and paste it into your website. It’s that easy to integrate your timelines into your own pages. We’re excited to introduce AI Timeline Generation, now available as a preview! Users can simply enter a prompt to generate detailed timelines in seconds, saving time on research and structure. This feature is designed to be adaptable: you can prompt the AI to generate timelines with as many or as few entries as you need, customizing the timeline to fit your story or theme perfectly.

During the preview, all users have the option to save their AI-generated timelines directly to their Chronologies library. It’s a great way to quickly create timelines or start projects that you can further refine over time.

We’re excited to introduce several new features and improvements to Chronologies with this release. Here’s what’s new:

• New: Date, Date and Time, and Free Text Dates 📅 Users can now choose between Date, Date and Time, or Free Text when creating a timeline entry. Free Text is ideal for documenting events from BCE, using circa dates, or epochs. When using free text, your timeline will automatically switch to custom sort mode, allowing full control over entry order. We’ve also changed the default selection to "Date" for better accessibility across browsers and mobile devices. To support broader date ranges, date inputs are now normalized to the range 01.01.0001 - 31.12.9999.

• New: Support for Unlisted (Sharable) Timelines 🔗 Our Public Timelines feature is now stable, and we’ve introduced a new Unlisted option. This allows anyone with the link to access your timeline without making it publicly indexed. All existing public timelines have been set to "Unlisted" by default. If you'd like to opt in for future public indexing features, you can switch your timeline to "Public" today.

• New: Easier Access to Emojis 😀 We’ve added an emoji picker to the toolbar when composing timeline entries. You can also use the shortcut : (colon) followed by an emoji name, like :smile, for quick access to commonly used emojis.

• Fix: Low Year Number Formatting 🛠️ We resolved an issue where low year numbers were incorrectly formatted as being in the twentieth century. Dates will now display accurately across all year ranges.

• Custom Sort for Timeline Entries: 📅 We’ve introduced a new option in the general timeline settings—“Sort timeline entries manually.” Once activated, this feature allows you to define the order of timeline entries via drag and drop, offering greater control over how information is presented. This addition is also a step towards enabling future enhancements in Chronologies.
• Enhanced HTML Metadata for Public Timelines: 🌐 To improve how public timelines appear when shared, we now generate timeline-specific HTML metadata, including image support within Open Graph (OG) tags. This enhancement ensures that your timelines are more visually appealing and informative across social media and other platforms.
• Improved Editor Workflow: 🖼️ We've optimized the user experience when adding images to timeline entries. After an image is inserted, the editor will automatically refocus, allowing you to continue adding text without interruption.
• Resolved Timeline Entry Placement Issue: 🛠️ A fix has been implemented to address an issue where timeline entries with the same "Date and Time" value were occasionally placed inconsistently. Entries will now be positioned correctly, ensuring a more accurate and reliable timeline display.

We've improved mobile view of timelines and fixed a glitch with long links in your entries. Now we're ready for the weekend party timeline! 🥳

✍️ Improved Editing Dialog: We've redesigned the editing dialog to make it more intuitive and user-friendly by embedding it into the timeline. You can now easily scroll back in time and look up that important note you wanted to reference in your new entry!

🖼️ Image Uploads with Drag & Drop: You can now add images to your timelines. Just drag and drop them in it's that simple. This should help bring your stories to life.

🖺 Rich Text Editing: We've also added rich text editing and table support. Now you can format your entries without the need for Markdown syntax knowledge! Needless to say the new editor is backward compatible and all your current formattings are preserved.

Keeping even small issues away, we've swiftly resolved two minor bugs for you today.

🔨 If you've updated your name or surname in your profile and proceeded to use the contact form to send us a message, you may have noticed that your old data persisted until the page was refreshed. This shouldn't be a problem anymore.

🧹 Similarly, if you were editing the title of a Collaborative Timeline, you might have observed that the badge for Collaborative Timeline disappeared after a successful edit, but reappeared only upon refreshing the page. Fixed.
